What Exactly are Dedicated Servers?

When we talk about hosting servers, there are three major kinds - shared website hosting web servers, VPS (Virtual Private Servers) and dedicated servers. Shared servers accommodate multiple customers and thus the system resources per user account are restricted, virtual private server plans give you more server configuration autonomy, but also influence other VPS web servers on the hardware node if used heedlessly, and dedicated servers give you the autonomy to carry out everything you like without messing with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are generally much more high-priced than shared hosting web servers or VPS web servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The reply is very simple. If your firm has a busy website, or just has very exact web server architecture requirements, the best choice would be a dedicated server. For someone who is inclined to invest in security and stability, the greater price is of no concern. You gain root-level access and can use 100 percent of the server's system resources without anyone else availing of these resources and intervening with your web pages.

Hardware configurations

The majority of web hosting firms, including us at World Hosting, offer several hardware configurations you can choose from on the basis of your needs. The configurations include different types of processors, a different amount of cores, different RAM and hard disk sizes and different bandwidth allowances. You can pick a web hosting CP, which is a handy interface if you wish to utilize the dedicated hosting web server for web hosting purposes only and prefer not to use a Secure Shell client for all the changes you will be making. We offer three kinds of web hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting CP of your choice

If you are a self-assured Linux user (our web hosting servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated server via a Secure Shell connection only. That, however, could be inconvenient, even more so if you choose to give full root privileges to someone else who has less technical abilities than yourself. That is why having hosting Control Panel software installed is a nice idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP GUI that we provide does not offer root privileges and is mostly suitable for somebody who maintains many online portals that consume lots of system resources, but would like to manage the web sites, databases and mail aliases through a user-friendly web hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel Control Panels, on the other hand, grant full root access and offer three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell hosting packages rather than utilizing the hosting server just for yourself, you should select one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In the event of a predicament with your dedicated server, like a non-responsive Apache or an outage, it is good to have some kind of monitoring platform enabled. Here at World Hosting the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated server too. Backups are also an extra feature - the hosting distributor offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could pick a kind of RAID that would permit you to keep the same data on 2 disk drives as a protective measure in the event of a hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given full root privileges erases something by mistake.
